What Is A 3 Stage Planetary Gearbox: Structure And Advantages

Dec 26, 2023

The planetary gearbox comes in three types based on the number of sets of planetary gear sets in its internal core transmission components: single-stage planetary gearbox, two-stage planetary gearbox, and three-stage planetary gearbox. Among these, the single-stage and two-stage planetary gearboxes are the most commonly used, while the three-stage planetary gearbox is less common. The three-stage design allows for a higher overall reduction ratio compared to single or double-stage planetary gearboxes. In this blog, I will delve into the structure and the advantages of the three stage planetary gearbox

The Structure of 3-Stage Planetary Gearbox

3 stage planetary gearbox consists of three sets of gears, each of which has a different diameter and number of teeth, to achieve the effect of multi-stage reduction and increased output torque.

First, we have the sun gear in the centre of the gearbox, directly linked to the input shaft. The number of teeth on the sun gear is usually the total of the teeth on the other two gear sets, deciding the transmission ratio for the first stage. When the input shaft turns the sun gear, the force goes to the first set of planetary gears.

Around the sun gear, there's a group of planetary gears connected by a planetary carrier. Each planetary gear has one or more smaller gears that connect with the sun gear and an inside ring gear. These planetary gears spin around the sun gear while turning on their own axes. This mix creates an extra transmission ratio, resulting in more torque output.

Finally, there's the internal ring gear, a ring-shaped gear between the planetary gears. Its inside teeth match the outside teeth of the planetary gears. The internal ring gear stays still, fixed to the gearbox casing, forming the outer edge of the gear system. This gear guides and limits the movement of the planetary gears, changing the transmission ratio and giving the needed torque output.

The Advantages of 3-stage planetary gearbox

1. Powerhouse of Torque

One of the standout features of the 3-stage planetary gearbox is its ability to deliver greater torque. With each stage contributing to the reduction in speed and amplification of torque, it becomes an ideal choice for applications requiring large power. This makes it a go-to solution for heavy-duty industrial machinery that demands robust performance.

2. Enhanced Efficiency

Compared to its 1-stage and 2-stage counterparts, the 3-stage design offers improved efficiency. The intricate distribution of torque across multiple stages ensures that the gearbox can handle larger loads with precision. This efficiency is crucial in industries where reliability and performance are non-negotiable factors.

3. Versatility in Gear Ratios:

The 3-stage planetary gearbox provides a broad range of gear ratios, offering unparalleled versatility. This adaptability is a key asset in applications where a delicate balance between speed and torque is required. From robotics to renewable energy systems, the 3-stage design proves its worth in diverse industrial landscapes.
