Stepper Motor FAQ
Dec 07, 2023
Q: What is the stepper motor accuracy and is it cumulative?
A: Generally the accuracy of stepper motors is within 5% of the step angle and is not cumulative
Q: What are the general control tolerances for resistance and inductance routines for stepper motors?
A: The tolerance of resistance is generally ±10%, and the tolerance of inductance is generally ±20%.
Q: What is the maximum allowable temperature on the exterior of a conventional stepper motor?
A: The maximum surface temperature of CLASS B motors can normally be operated within 80°C for long periods of time, and can be permitted to be within 100°C for short periods.
Q: Why does the torque of a stepper motor decrease with increasing speed?
A: When the stepper motor rotates, the inductance of the motor windings in each phase will form a reverse electromotive force; the higher the frequency, the greater the reverse electromotive force. Under its action, the motor decreases in effective current with increasing frequency (or speed), which leads to a decrease in torque.
Q: Why can a stepper motor start normally at low speeds, but not above a certain speed?
A: When the starting torque of the stepper motor can overcome the inertia of the rotor, the stepper motor can start directly at a certain speed, when the starting speed is faster, the starting current of the motor is too late to increase the starting torque of the motor becomes smaller, and it can't overcome the inertia to start.
Q: How to reduce stepper motor vibration?
A: 1, Change the input signal frequency CP to avoid the motor oscillation region;
2. Use subdivision stepper motor driver, so that the stepper motor step angle is reduced, and make the stepper motor run smoother;
3, Use some other auxiliary way to increase electronic or physical damping.
Q: What is the normal service life of a stepper motor?
A: The life of a stepper motor depends mainly on the bearing life, and the bearing life depends on the usage conditions of the stepper motor. Under the usage conditions specified by our company, we guarantee that the life of stepper motor is MTBF 6000 hours (99% reliability).
Q: Why doesn't the stepper motor run when energized?
A: 1. Overload leads to blocking (at this time the motor has a whistling sound);
2. Check whether the motor is offline ;
3. Check whether the control system has a pulse signal to the stepper motor driver;
4. Check whether there is a problem with the wiring.
Q: Why does the stepper motor jitter and not run continuously?
A: 1. First, check whether the motor's winding and drive connection is connected incorrectly;
2. Check whether the input pulse signal frequency is too high;
3. Check whether the lift frequency design is unreasonable.
Q: Why does the stepper motor overheat during operation?
A: 1, the working environment is too harsh, the ambient temperature is too high;
2. Improper selection of parameters, such as excessive current, exceeding the rated current;
3. The voltage of the motor is too high and the speed is too fast when working.
Q: Why does the stepper motor stop and not rotate during operation?
A: 1. Drive power supply failure;
2. Motor coil turn-to-turn short circuit or ground;
3. Winding burned;
4. Pulse generation circuit failure
5. Debris stuck;
6. Loose connection line, poor contact.
Q: Why do stepper motors run out of step during operation?
A: 1. the load is too large, or the load is not uniform;
2. Elastic deformation of the parts produced by the transmission gap;
3. The motor works in the oscillation area;
4. the motor working area has a source of interference.
